Grade 8 Science Experiment 4 - An Egg: Does it Sink or Float?
The purpose of this science fair project is to explore how densities of objects and substances interact with each other. "Density" has several different definitions because it can be used in a variety of contexts. In this case, density refers to the mass per unit volume of a substance under specified conditions of pressure and temperature. The density of plain water, salt water and eggs will be explored to see how they interact with each other.
It should be noted that the density of a substance compared to the density of water is referred to as "Specific Gravity". Specific gravity refers the ratio of the density (weight per unit volume) of one substance (in this case an egg) to the density of water. Water has a specific gravity which is set at 1.00.
The egg will float in salt water because the egg has a lower density then the salt water. The egg will sink in plain water because the egg has a higher density then the salt water.
