Grade 9 Science Experiment 1 - Projectile Motion - Does a marble projectile fall straight down?




Purpose: 


The purpose of this science fair project is to demonstrate Galileo's theory that horizontal and vertical motions are independent.  Galileo's theory says that if you project a ball horizontally and drop another ball from the same height, both balls will strike the ground at the same time.  The force of gravity pulls the ball towards the center of the earth.  This pull causes the ball to travel in a curved path because it moves horizontally as it falls to the ground.


In this science fair project you will create an incline launching pad.  A marble will be rolled down this launching pad and will be projected horizontally.  Physics plays a role as you observe the effects of the pull of gravity and horizontal displacement. 


Hypothesis: 


Horizontal and vertical motion of an object are independent.


Variables:


1.  Height of the ruler launch pad

2.  Weight and size of the marbles


Materials Needed: 


  • Wooden Ruler with grooves
  • Marbles of varying weights and sizes
  • Nails
  • A Brick
  • 12 inch x 6 inch Wooden board
  • Plumb line with a plumb bob
  • Graph Paper
  • Pencil
