| Grade 9 Science Experiment 10 - How to Create your Own Invisible Ink Messages and Secret Codes

Purpose:
The purpose of this science fair project is to understand how the properties of lemon juice reacts with heat. The acids, sugars, and other chemicals in dried lemon juice will turn brown when placed in front of a heat source. Chromatography will also be explored. Chromatography is the process of spotting a chemical on an absorbent material and dipping an edge of the material in liquid which reveals a spot that separates into colored spots. Use chromatography to create a secret code.
Hypothesis:
You can write and reveal invisible messages using lemon juice. Secret codes can be created based on chromatography results.
Variables:
- Amount of lemon juice
- Color of pens and markers
- Chromatography dip source (water, salt water, and rubbing alcohol)
Materials Needed:
Science fair project #1:
- Lemon juice
- Small paintbrush
- White writing paper
- 3-oz Paper cup
- Black ink pen
Science fair project #2:
- Pens and markers in a variety of colors
- Paper towel
- Three small dinner plates
- Water
- Salt
- Rubbing alcohol
