Grade 9 Biology Project 3 - The Amazing Workings of a Human Heart and Lungs
Purpose:
The purpose of this science fair project is to explain how the human heart and lungs function. The function of these vital organs will be demonstrated by building a stethoscope to listen to a heart beat. The heart rate of individuals will be monitored while they are at rest and after exercising vigorously.
In addition, a diaphragm will also be constructed to show how the human lungs work. The virtual diaphragm will demonstrate how it affects chest pressure.
OR
Hypothesis:
The heart rate of the test subjects (other students) will be higher after vigorous exercise. The position of the diaphragm affects the pressure in the chest.
Variables:
- Heart beat at rest versus after exercise
- Position of the diaphragm
Materials Needed:
For the stethoscope you will need:
- Small funnel
- Glass T-tube or Y-tube
- Rubber tubing
For the diaphragm you will need:
- Rubber tube
- Clamp
- Rubber band or string
- Y-Tube
- Bell jar
- Rubber balloons
- Sheet rubber
- Rubber Stopper
