Grade 9 Science Experiment 17 - Determine the Humidity by Investigating your Hair!
Purpose:
The purpose of this science fair project is to determine the humidity level by investigating the status of your hair. You will create a "Hair Hygrometer". A hygrometer is a scientific instrument used to measure the moisture content or the humidity of air or any gas. A common hygrometer is one that measure temperature (thermometer). There are also mechanical hygrometers. Mechanical hygrometers revolve around the principle that organic substances, such as human hair, contract and expand in response to the relative humidity. The contraction and expansion moves a needle gage. The hair hygrometer was invented in the late 18th century.
Hypothesis:
The humidity level can be measured using a homemade hair hygrometer as opposed to determining humidity levels based on scientific tables.
Variables:
- Humidity level
- Environment
- Weather
- Strand of hair
- Length of strand of hair when pulled down by 50gm weight.
Materials Needed:
- Human hairs that are 30cm long
- Dilute caustic soda solution
- Small wood piece which will act as the base of the hair hygrometer
- Small sewing spool with center axle
- Light pointer of balsa wood
- Scale created from a post card
- 50 gm weight
- Wood post 12 inches in length.
- Nails
- Hammer
